As a C character constant, using the single quotes like that, the doubling is required. Generally, other quoting like angle brackets are used when how C does things isn't the intent. Maybe <\> would be less confusing there, I'm just positing why it's like that now. |

Hmm it doesn't really become obvious, IMO, that this is C style quoting here. |
